Background:

Stewart reports that the 21st Battalion served with the 4th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Division from September 15, 1915 until the armistice.

Forum Members Al Lloyd and Steve Nichol have an active interest in the 21st Battalion and has kindly provided permission to republish the newspaper clippings and web site information for the 21st Battalion. Thanks to Al for the cap badge and patch emblems for this page.

Steve has just finished his book (cover shown to the left). You can now place your order with Steve via the CEFSG Forum if you CLICK HERE.

We have created a new "documents" section on the Matrix for such attachments and you can find the 21st Battalion report as it appeared in the Kingston Daily Standard August 19, 1914.

The following additional information was supplied:

Authorized by the Canadian Government in October 1914
Demobilized May 24, 1919 at Kingston ON
Trained in Kingston October 1914 - May 1915Occ
Sailed for England aboard the SS Metagama May 6, 1915
Trained at West Sandling Camp until September 1915
Sailed for France September 15, 1915
Served in Canadian 2nd Division, 4th Brigade
Returned to Canada aboard the SS Caronia and demobilized 24 May 1919

While in Kingston they had 3 mascots. A Collie dog "Major" and a British Bull Terrier "Buster", each of whom remained in Kingston when battalion sailed. The third mascot, a goat named "Nan" (more info on Nan) served throughout the war with the battalion and received the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal from HRH The Prince of Wales.

The battalion is perpetuated by the Princess of Wales' Own Regiment (PWOR) in Kingston ON.  The PWOR museum, in the armouries at 100 Montreal St Kingston ON, house many artifacts from the 21st, including it's Colours, as well as the Colours from the 59th Battalion.

This website is a photo tribute to the 21st Battalion CEF that formed in Kingston Ontario in 1914 and proceeded to England then France to fight in World War 1.  The site is made possible by the co-operation of the many contributions from descendents of 21st Battalion members.   Special recognition must go to the members of the 21sters Yahoo Group.  Their members relentlessly scour the old newspapers and cemeteries for photos and stories about the Battalion to contribute to the site.

From 21sters Internet Site:

The 21st Battalion CEF was organized in Kingston Ontario during World War 1 (WW1), under Lt Col W.S. Hughes, of men and officers of Eastern Ontario. It was also known as the Eastern Ontario Regiment. 5326 men and officers passed through its ranks during the war. Only 106 of the original soldiers entered Germany at the end of the war. Some 3328 were killed, wounded or went missing in action. 11 battle honours grace its colours. Over 300 medals and citations were earned. It disbanded after the job was done, but is perpetuated by The Princess of Wales Own Regiment in Kingston Ontario. A museum and a significant archives are located in The Armouries in Kingston Ont.

Sub-Components:

When first formed in Kingston, they were divided into 2 halves (left and right) for logistical and housing purposes.
They first consisted of 8 companies (numbered 1 - 8)
Later reorganized into 4 companies (lettered A - D)
The battalion had a pipe band, a brass band, and a bugle band. All the members served as stretcher bearers at the front.
