Stewart reports that the 236th Battalion, known as either the "New Brunswick Kilties" of the "MacLean Highlanders" were formed with an initial strength of 1,029 men.  The battalion was broken up to provide reinforcements to the Canadian Corps in the field, which David Love's text says was to the 20th Reserve Battalion.  Love's text further reports that the 20th Reserve Battalion reinforced the 13th and 42nd Battalions in France.   Stewart only reports that the brass and pipe band was absorbed by the 20th Reserve Battalion, so some further review may be needed on this aspect.  All agree that the battalion was perpetuated by the 1st Battalion, The Royal New Brunswick Regiment.

Nicholson has no reports on the 236th Infantry Battalion, so we can not report further on that aspect of the battalion.

You will find the CEFSG Matrix report on the 236th Battalion as part of the planned 5th Division in the 1917 ORBAT:

1917 ORBAT with 236th Battalion

From Library and Archives Canada we find that there are a number of entries, but only the war diaries are on-line.  For the other documents, please see these details:

For a non-combatant battalion that is a significant number of entries, but unfortunately they are not available on-line.
