I've spent hours trawling through the Alberta Heritage site -
great selection of period newspapers which have been scanned
courtesy of the Province of Alberta (should be a model for the
rest of the Provinces!!!) - and have come across interesting
tidbits of information.
These links give some info about the 56th Bn, plus a great photo
page of their officers. The only downside is the site seems to
changes their address from time to time so the links may be
broken in the future.
Anyway, I'll email you links every so often as I go through what
I've saved on my hard disk.
