Background:

This category was used when the references indicated that the unit was "absorbed" by a Reserve Battalion, rather than just a statement that it was "broken up" to supply reinforcements, or where it was absorbed by another "active" battalion.

We have differentiated these units that were "absorbed" from those that were initially part of the January 1917 5th Division, as a number of researchers are looking specifically at those battalions. You will find these listed under the "Reorganized Units" as "Original 5th" and as well in the main page for the "5th Division".

Sub-Components:

These battalions, as noted in the Summary Table, were moved to or absorbed by reserve battalions: (click on link for more details - limited at present so members are encourage to submit more information!)

Broznitsky reports the 48th raised in Victoria went to England in July 1915 and whilst waiting to go to France, became 3rd Pioneer in early 1916 (much to their chagrin). The 3rd Pnrs left for France in March 1916 and served with 3rd Division until May 1917. As such, they needed a War Diary, to record their movements, work, and casualties. So their WD begins in March 1916 and finishes in May 1917.
