Background:

The battalions listed on this page were part of the original 5th Division that was created in January 1917 and disbanded in February 1918.

We have isolated these here for the benefit of researchers who are looking at the original composition of the 5th Division and following their track once disbanded.

The history of the 5th Division is detailed on that page under the "Army Corps".

Sub-Components:

104th Battalion (WDL) New Brunswick, absorbed by 13th Reserve Battalion
119th Battalion (WDL) (Algoma), Sault St. Marie ON, absorbed by 8th Reserve Battalion
125th Battalion (WDL) Brant County, absorbed by 8th Reserve Battalion
128th Battalion (WDL) Moose Jaw & Area, absorbed by 15th & 19th Reserve Battalions
134th Battalion (WDL) (48th Highlanders) Toronto, absorbed by 12th Reserve Battalion
156th Battalion (WDL) Leeds & Greenville, absorbed by 2nd, 21st, 38th, PPCLI, 2nd Reserve
160th Battalion (WDL) Bruce County, absorbed by 4th Reserve Battalion
161st Battalion (WDL) Huron County, absorbed by 4th Reserve Battalion
185th Battalion (WDL) Cape Breton Highlanders, absorbed by 17th Reserve
199th Battalion (WDL) Irish Canadian Rangers, absorbed by 23rd Reserve Battalion
202nd Battalion (WDL) (Edmonton Sportsmen) absorbed by 9th Reserve Battalion

We have also been advised that the 198th Battalion War Diary shows that they were assigned to 5th Division, 15th Brigade on 10 May, 1917. This is consistent with the date generally given for the disbandment of the 199th Battalion as 11 May, 1917.

198th Battalion (WDL) Canadian Buffs, absorbed by 3rd Reserve Battalion
