CFA Summary

Home Up

(this table last updated on Monday January 12, 2009 08:35:49 AM )

Each of the Corps Divisions had 2 Brigades of Canadian Field Artillery and each of the Corps CFA Brigades consisted of 3 Field Batteries and 1 Howitzer Battery.  The main matrix pages under the Divisions will lead you to the details on the CFA Brigades in each Division and the corresponding war diary links.

This differs from the Troops Artillery that did not necessarily move in unison with the Divisions.  Check that link If you are looking for the CFA units associated with the Army Troops (8th, 13th & 14th Brigades).

The initial searches of the War Diaries at Library and Archives Canada suggests that the War Diaries for the CFA are posted for Brigades and not individual Field Batteries, thus that is all we can link you to at this time.  Therefore, the first link in each of Column 3 is for the full brigade.  If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.

The initial searches for War Diaries for the "Howitzer Batteries" provided a link only to the 35th "Trench" Howitzer Battery in 1915, as part of the 1st Division.  There was a 35th Howitzer Battery in the 3rd Division (Nicholson pg. 545) but I do not know if they were the same units, as the word "Trench" my have been discontinued.  Call the experts!  I have not yet found the Howitzer Battery listing in Love's text.

In some cases, we have actually found individual Field Battery War Diaries (the first of which was the 16th Battery CFA, found in the progression by accident.  There may be more, so if we find them we will update this table.

The main War Diary Link for this group is here: Canadian Field Artillery

There appear to be a number of "extras" in the War Diaries for the CFA that are not associated with the Divisions, nor are they in the Army Troops classification for "Artillery" (8th CFA, 13th CFA, 14th CFA - see fix below for 13th and 14th).  There are also a number of CFA Batteries that are not shown as part of the Army Corps (later check, they may be in the Army Troops, i.e. 24th Brigade  CFA - we will catch them later when we do that update!). For the moment, until we figure this out, the War Diary lists that are not presented here are as follows:

7th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery
(Love page 158 says "Disbanded on Reorganization 1918")
11th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery
(Love page 158 says "Disbanded on Reorganization 1918")
12th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery
(Love page 158 says "Disbanded on Reorganization 1918")

The list has been updated to show the 13th and 14th Brigades of the CFA that were associated with the 5th Canadian Division.  The artillery components joined the 5th Division in August 1917.  A 15th Brigade CFA was part of the 5th Division as well but it was broken up in August 1917.

There is a residual question that has to be dealt with as Love also reports that the 8th Brigade CFA was also "Disbanded on Reorganization 1918", but it appears as part of the Army Troops Artillery in Nicholson.  Closer examination reveals the Nicholson calls it the "8th Army Brigade CFA" so perhaps the units are not the same?

Only one (1) Howitzer Battery shows up in the War Diaries and that is listed as the 35th Trench Howitzer Battery, which may or may not be the same as the 35th Howitzer Battery listed in the 3rd Division, 10th Brigade CFA.  Prior to that I had not seen the word "Trench" in the Howitzer Battery listings.

We also have some issues as on Love page 160 there are multiple entries for some Battery's of the CFA (i.e. 30th Battery, 31st Battery).  Please keep this in mind when you are reviewing these tables!!!  In addition there are a large number of CFA units listed in Love that do not show up in the Army Corps or Army Troops of Nicholson.  This is of course understandable, as of the 260 Infantry Battalions in the Divisions only 48 show up as part of the Army Corps Divisions - the rest being reconfigured as Reserve Battalions or Replacements.  For the moment, we can assume the same applied to the CFA units.
